Wilson & Baba Ready for USBC Bantamweight Title Clash

By WPBF-USBC, August 19.2008

Local favorite Andre Wilson faces former world title challenger and current IBA Americas bantamweight titlist Alex "Ali" Baba from Ghana for the USBC bantamweight title on September 27 at the 4,500 seat Civic Arena in St. Joseph, Missouri.

This showdown has fans buzzing about the possible outcome for both the experienced hard nosed warrior, Baba 26-13-1-(13) and the young lion Wilson 11-1-1- (9). Matchmaker Rob Merritt says Wilson just turned down the opportunity to fight as the Co-Main Event on Showtime, instead, choosing to take this fight in front of his hometown fans for his first title.

Merritt said he is very proud to be able to bring in the current IBA champion to face Wilson who is currently ranked #1 in the U.S. by the United States Boxing Council (USBC). Wilson is coming off a second round knockout of highly touted Bantamweight prospect Francisco Rodriguez on Telefutura Television. Wilson said "I will be in great shape, and I know this is the Big Time". I want this belt around my waist and I will do whatever it takes to make that happen
